Early Obstetric Ultrasound
We offer both early first trimester screening at 11 to 14 weeks and structural surveys of the fetus at 18 to 22 weeks.
A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine described a multicenter trial which combined early obstetric ultrasound combined with pertinent laboratory values for early detection of chromosal abnormalities (Trisomies 18 and 21). The benefit of early screening is to detect fetal anomalies at an earlier age; however, it is still to early to consider the early screening (at 11 to 14 weeks) as routine screening for all expecting mothers. The time in which the obstetric ultrasound is performed should be determined by the obstetrician.
